The OrthoMouse

OrthoVia’s  OrthoMouse

The Ultimate “Position of Function” Computer Mouse

The OrthoMouse represents a quantum leap in the design of hand held computer input devices and
not a band aid on pre-existing concepts. It has been conceived and developed by a medical doctor to completely respect the anatomy and function of the human hand and to specifically “do no harm“. It finally seriously addresses the pandemic of Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) resulting from extensive use of tools that do not fully respect the anatomy and function of the hand that uses them.

The unique, asymmetrical, right hand specific shape and form of the OrthoMouse obligates the hand to work and rest in the "Position of Function". This is defined in Orthopedics as the only position where all the musculoskeletal components of the fingers, hand, wrist and forearm exist in complete equilibrium. What it means to the user is that any extensive and repetitive work or periods of immobilization (rest/inactivity) are easily and naturally conducted in a position that will not cause strain, pain or injuries.  This fact is well documented in orthopedics, extensively clinically tested and by now widely proven in the field.

*The OrthoMouse is a "semi-spherical" device which fully supports the "hole of the hand", wrist and fingers in the Position of Function without the chance of accidental clicks.

*The force needed to click any of the five buttons is on the average at least half of the force required by any other conventional mouse, thus allowing for fatigue free use over longer periods of time.

*The relationship maintained between the thumb and forefinger is that of an "opposition", which it the main characteristic of the human hand, also known as the “precision grip”. This allows the user to utilize this device with uncommonly high degree of control and precision. Think of how you hold a pen when writing. This high precision is further enhanced by the location of the optical sensor within the area encompassed by the pincer position.  It also means that the actual "travel" distance of the device over the mouse pad/surface is very minimal, usually within an inch of space with a maximum precision.

*The third button function and a replacement for the conventional scroll wheel are accomplished by a set of three light-click buttons, located in the thumb position.

*The OrthoMouse is adaptable to the size and function of the average hand by means of three easily interchangeable (small, medium and large) adapters for the palm of the hand and two upper adapters intended as a guide for the average or longer fingers. All adapters are included in the package.

*The body of the OrthoMouse has been specially textured to provide micro- channels for air flow/ decreased perspiration.

*While the controversy over the use of ICRF (Information Carrying Radio Frequencies) and its effects on the human health is steadily increasing, we advocate the use of corded device rather than a wireless one.

We also maintain, that to get the full benefit from use of the OrthoMouse, it should be used in conjunction with the recommended correct bodily posture in respect to the height and position of the working surface, forearm support and optimized seating arrangement .  Don't forget, the hand is connected to the rest of your body.  Like with any new device, your hand will require to re-learn how to rest, get rid of some old bad habits and adapt to working in a healthy mode.
